The inspiration for the Angels & Friends Foundation is a cheerful and spirited toddler named Ali Schiele. Ali was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on November 02, 2011.  At 14 months of age, Ali began experiencing seizures. After persistent investigation by her parents and medical team, Ali was diagnosed with Angelman Syndrome in July 2013.

The Foundation’s name is very symbolic in what we do and who we represent. Individuals with Angelman Syndrome are often referred to as “Angels” both for the syndrome name but also for their general happy demeanor. The word “Angels” therefore represents Ali and all other Angels living among us. The word “Friends” represents those children, who like Ali, bravely battle through life living with a intellectual disorder. Thus, our Foundation aims to better the lives of “Angels” and their “Friends”.

Ali’s diagnosis introduced an entire new world to Ali's parents, family members and friends. Through frequent hospital stays and weekly medical/therapy appointments, Ali's parents have been introduced to many wonderful people and organizations that strive to make the lives of those with intellectual disabilities better.

Unfortunately, Ali's parents have also been exposed to the reality of families and individuals that struggle both emotionally and financially with raising an intellectually disabled child.  Extended hospital stays, medical appointments and intense therapy schedules take a toll on both these children and their families. These families forget what it's like to be families and these brave and courageous children miss the opportunity to be kids.

This is a photo of Ali at the age of 12 months. Like most children with Angelman Syndrome, Ali began to have seizures soon after her first birthday.

The Angels & Friends Foundation Corporation was founded by Bradley & Tracy Schiele in February 2014.  The Foundation is run by an all volunteer staff and board who dedicates their time and expertise towards creating opportunities for children living with intellectual disabilities. In addition to providing financial assistances, the Foundation also advocates on behalf of these deserving families and their courageous children.
